Halle Berry cast in TV series 'Extant,' produced by Steven Spielberg
Halle Berry is returning to the small screen.
The 47-year-old Oscar-winning actress will star in the CBS serialized drama "Extant," which will air during summer 2014, CBS announced on Friday, Oct. 4. The show is being made in partnership with Steven Spielberg's Amblin Television and CBS Television Studios.
Berry will play an astronaut who returns home from a year-long solo mission in space and tries to reconnect with her husband and son. Her experiences both at home and in space will lead to events that will change the course of human history.
"There's only one Halle Berry and we are incredibly honored that she has chosen 'Extant' to expand her illustrious career," Spielberg said in a statement. "As she does with everything she touches, she will bring a deep authenticity to her role and I very much look forward to working with her."
"I'm always on the lookout for amazing roles and when you see material that contains this strong of auspices, nuance and complexity it compels me to run toward it no matter the medium," Berry said in a statement. "For five months a year I'll get to live with and play this incredibly intelligent and vulnerable woman, and for the remainder of the year I'll continue to look for other roles that move me as deeply as this one."
Berry continued, "I've found amazing partners in CBS's Nina Tassler and Les Moonves, and the incredible Steven Spielberg, along with his Amblin production team, whose vision and creativity in storytelling is unparalleled."
This will be Berry's first regular television role since the actress appeared as a recurring character on "Knots Landing" in 1991. Since then, Berry's television work has included the TV miniseries "Queen" and TV movies like "Solomon & Sheba," "The Wedding" and "Their Eyes Were Watching God." Berry also had a guest role on "Frasier."
Berry won an Emmy and Golden Globe award for her role in the TV movie "Introducing Dorothy Dandridge." The actress won her Oscar in 2002 (see video) for her starring role in "Monster's Ball."
Spielberg and Berry worked together once in the past. Berry played Miss Stone in the 1994 live-action film "The Flintstones." Spielberg served as an executive producer on the film, but was credited as Steven Spielrock, a Stone Age play on his last name.
