HBO has cancelled its dark comedy series "Enlightened," which starred Laura Dern, after two seasons on the air.

The finale of the premium cable show aired on March 3 and earned a rating of 0.1 among adults between ages 18 to 49. The show, which debuted in October 2011, never earned a rating in that coveted demographic higher than 0.17, given for its season 2 premiere in January.

"It was a very difficult decision," HBO said in a statement, regarding the cancellation, which was announced on Tuesday, March 19. "We're proud of the show and we look forward to working with [co-creator] Mike White and Laura Dern in the future."

"Enlightened" starred Dern as Amy Jellicoe, a woman who decides to turn her lige around after undergoing rehab at a holistic treatment center following a mental breakdown at work. Diane Ladd, the actress' mother, played her mom on the show, while Luke Wilson portrayed her ex-husband.

White, who is also an actor who starred in the 2003 film "The School of Rock," also appeared in "Enlightened," as Jellico's friend and coworker, Tyler. The show also featured "SNL" alum Molly Shannon as his girlfriend and Dermot Mulroney as a Los Angeles Times reporter who dates Jellicoe.

Despite the show's low ratings, Dern won a Golden Globe in 2012 for her role, beating Zoey Deschabel of "New Girl," Laura Linney of "The Big C," Amy Poehler of "Parks and Recreation" and Tina Fey of "30 Rock." That year, "Enlightened" was also nominated for Best Television Series - Comedy Or Musical but lost to "Modern Family." (Check out a full list of 2012 Golden Globe winners.)
