Gwyneth Paltrow: Marriage is hard
Gwyneth Paltrow, star of the new film "Country Strong," does not find marriage easy but praises husband Chris Martin, singer of Coldplay, as a "really good dad" and says he identified her postpartum depression.
The 38-year-old actress met Martin, 33, at one of his rock band's concerts in 2002. She married the British singer a year later. They have two children - daughter Apple, 6, and son Moses, 4. She splits her time between England and the United States, where she usually films movies.
"Marriage is hard," Paltrow told Good Housekeeping magazine. "Chris and I have had our ups and downs, big-time. Marriage is way more complicated than just 'Who gets to control the remote?' But hopefully we keep heading in the same direction and getting through the obstacles."
"I definitely have to coax things out of him when we talk," she added. "You know, he's British, so it's a different lexicon totally. But you have to communicate. Otherwise there's no relationship. I can depend on him. He makes me laugh. He's really appreciative of me. You know, he makes me feel special."
Martin, she said, was a "really good dad," citing his relaxed nature and how he helps Apple with her homework. Paltrow said he also helped her deal with the postpartum depression she suffered after giving birth to Moses. She has said in interviews before that it lasted for about five months.
"I felt like a zombie," Paltrow said. "I couldn't access my heart. I couldn't access my emotions. I just thought it meant I was a terrible mother and a terrible person. About four months into it, Chris came to me and said, 'Something's wrong. Something's wrong. I kept saying, 'No, no, I'm fine.' But Chris identified it, and that sort of burst the bubble."
Paltrow's new film, "Country Strong," is set for release on Jan. 7, 2011. She says she was inspired by Beyonce and Faith Hill while preparing to play country singer Kelly Canter in the film.
Paltrow provides her own vocals in the movie, which sees Canter looking for a comeback and also stars Hill's husband, fellow country singer Tim McGraw, as Canter's husband and manager. Meester, a "Gossip Girl" actress who has also released music, plays a former beauty queen. Paltrow performed the title track of "Country Strong" at the 2010 CMA Awards.
The actress received a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame in December. Tim McGraw, who stars with Paltrow in "Country Strong" and Hill, his wife, attended the ceremony, as Matthew Morrison of "Glee", the FOX musical sitcom that featured Paltrow as a substitute teacher.
Paltrow says she is set to return to the show to reprise her role as free-spirited Holly Holiday.
