'Grey's Anatomy' star Chyler Leigh talks possible cast shake-up
"Grey's Anatomy" could face a big shake-up at Seattle Grace Hospital if series stars Patrick Dempsey and Ellen Pompeo leave the show next season. Patrick Dempsey reportedly said in a recent interview that the next season of the medical drama "will be my last."
Meanwhile, Dempsey's co-star and on-screen love interest, Ellen Pompeo, has also hinted in recent interviews that she will make her exit once her contract is up next season, the show's eighth.
While the actors' exits have not been officially confirmed by the network, actress Chyler Leigh, who plays the sister of Pompeo's titular character, told OnTheRedCarpet.com at the 2nd annual Thirst Project Gala on Tuesday, "It's really their decision and the decision of the network. It's kind of hard to talk about, because I really don't know what they're going to do."
"In the meantime we're still going to have a great season and have fun together," she added.
When asked if her character would replace Pompeo's as the lead, she said, "I would take the job if it were offered. I mean it has been offered, but ... you know what I'm saying."
In May, Dempsey reportedly told Italian Vanity Fair "I don't know what will happen with the other characters, but for me, it's done."
The actor's spokesperson told OnTheRedCarpet.com, "He [Dempsey] was referring to the fact that his contract is up at the end of next season and we have no idea what the future holds." ABC had no comment on the matter.
In a 2010 interview, Ellen Pompeo told Extra, "When my contract is up after Season 8, I would probably not renew. I think I've told all the stories I can tell as Meredith Grey."
She later clarified her remarks to TV Line in May saying, "No one has asked us [her fellow cast members] to come back after Season 8, so I couldn't presume that I'm coming back ... if I haven't been invited."
