'Grey's Anatomy' musical episode in the works
A musical episode of the ABC medical drama series "Grey's Anatomy" is in the works, creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes says.
The series began in 2005 and stars Patrick Dempsey and Ellen Pompeo. Sara Ramirez, who plays Callie on the show, has had plenty of singing experience, having won a Tony Award for her role in the musical "Monty Python's Spamalot", but other cast members have no professional training. Check out spoilers below about what to expect on the musical episode of "Grey's Anatony".
"It's definitely a Callie-heavy story, but it's a story that we would've told whether there was singing or not," Rhimes told TVGuide.com. "It's always nice to have a Tony winner on deck to do a little singing."
Drama shows and sitcoms have often featured musical episodes - namely "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", the medical series "Scrubs" and "Fringe". Rhimes said the "Grey's Anatomy" characters will sing songs that the show "has made famous," without elaborating.
"We're not doing what anybody would call a typical musical episode," Rhimes said. "The comparisons to other musical episodes are too great, and we wanted it to be different. Nobody is going to be dancing and singing down the halls; that's not our show. Our show is known for its music. I very much wanted to do something that was musical without being a musical."
