Is this the summer of superheroes? "Green Lantern," with Ryan Reynolds and "Gossip Girl" star Blake Lively, won the weekend box office with an estimated $52.7 million, according to the Associated Press. Though "Green Lantern" was strong enough to take the top spot at the box office, the wire service notes that its opening numbers were weaker than other recent superhero related releases like the $65.7 million debut of "Thor" or the $55.1 million haul for the debut weekend of "X-Men: First Class." "Green Lantern" is based on the DC Comic book that follows fighter pilot Hal Jordan (Reynolds), who becomes the first human inducted into the Green Lantern Corps., a brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order. Each Green Lantern wears a ring that gives him superpowers. The Green Lanterns come together to fight a new enemy called Parallax and with the help of his fellow pilot and childhood sweetheart Carol Ferris (Lively), Jordan overcomes his fear to join the fight. J.J. Abrams' sci-fi thriller "Super 8," which topped last weekend's box office, landed in second place this weekend with $21.3 million, raising its domestic total to $72.8 million for its second weekend in theaters. Jim Carrey's family comedy "Mr. Popper's Penguins," which took the second place spot on Friday, slipped to third place with $18.2 million for the weekend. "X-Men: First Class" is still doing strong numbers at the box office. The Marvel comic-based film earned $11.5 million over the weekend to land in fourth place. The film has made $119.9 million for its entire three-week box office run. In fifth place is "The Hangover Part II," which earned $9.6 million in its fourth weekend in theaters. The film has earned $232.7 million domestically and its worldwide box office total now stands at $488.7 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter, making it the biggest R-rated comedy of all time.
