Golden Globe Awards: Octavia Spencer wins Best Supporting Actress - Drama for 'The Help'
Octavia Spencer has won a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture for her role in "The Help," marking her first win and nomination.
Spencer, 39, beat co-star Jessica Chastain as well as nominees Berenice Bejo of "The Artist," Shailene Woodley of "The Descendants" and Janet McTeer of "Albert Nobbs."
"Seriously ... nuts," Spencer said in her acceptance speech as the audience cheered.
She later added: "I'm just trembling here, I"m going to fall off in these high heel shoes."
The actress, who won her first Golden Globe for her role in 'The Help,' wore a lilac Tadashi Shoji gown with a jeweled front and Christian Louboutin heels to the ceremony (see more photos of celebrities at the Golden Globes).
"The Help" was nominated for five Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture - Drama." The movie stars Emma Stone as an aspiring writer and college graduate who was raised partially by a black maid in the 1960s in Jackson, Mississippi. She decides to write a book from the perspective of many blac domestic workers in the area, including two who are played by Spencer and Viola Davis.
Bryce Dallas Howard plays a white, snobbish woman who disrespects "the help," while Chastain plays a white woman who treats them as equals. Both the latter actress and Davis also received Golden Globe nods.
"I always say [the] civil rights movement is at the backdrop and what's at the forefront are these relationships and they captivate you with their heart, their need to be a part of each other's lives and that's what life is about in the end," Davis told OnTheRedCarpet.com at the film's August 9 premiere.
Davis, 46, hails from South Carolina and has appeared in movies such as the 2008 film "Doubt" and "Knight and Day" with Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz in 2010. She also portrayed Lynda P. Frazier on the Showtime series "United States of Tara" before nabbing her role in "The Help."
Spencer, an Alabama native, previously starred in films such as "Being John Malkovich" and the 2002 film "Spider-Man." Stone stars in a new 2012 movie about the superhero. Spencer has also had parts on shows such as "Ugly Betty." She can be seen next in the 2012 movie "Smashed," which also stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Aaron Paul.
