George Clooney has won the 2012 Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama for his role as a father of two girls in "The Descendants" marking his third win for acting and 12th overall nomination.

Clooney beat Ryan Gosling, his co-star in another film, "The Ides of March," as well as nominees Leonardo DiCaprio of "J. Edgar," Michael Fassbender of "Shame" and Brad Pitt of "Moneyball." The winners of the 2012 Golden Globes were named at a Los Angeles ceremony on Sunday, January 15.

"I'd like to thank Michael Fassbender for taking over the frontal nudity responsiblity that I had," Clooney joked during his acceptance speech, referring to the actor's role in the NC-17-rated film "Shame."

Clooney thanked his fellow actors, director Alexander Payne, the film studio and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which produces the ceremony and votes on the winners. He also praised Pitt for his global humanitarian work. He made no mention of his girlfriend, former WWE star Stacy Keibler, who accompanied him to the Golden Globe Awards. In "The Descendants," Clooney plays a Hawaii man named Matt King, who faces the challenge of raising his two young daughters after his wife is injured in a boating accident and slips into a coma. King has also just inherited a large chunk of land, while a shady relative, played by Beau Bridges, has his own ideas of what he should do with it.

One of King's daughters is played by Shailene Woodley, who is known for her role as Amy Juergens in the ABC Family series "The Secret Life of the American Teenager."

"The Descendants" was nominated for five Golden Globe Awards, including individual acting nods for Clooney and Woodley.

"George is a super human," she told OnTheRedCarpet.com. "He's incredible - beyond incredible. On a ... personal level, I became a better person after knowing him. George Clooney is a phenomenal actor because he's a phenomenal actor, not because an editor makes him look good."

Clooney told OnTheRedCarpet.com that while "The Descendants" has many tricky emotional scenes, he wouldn't describe his acting work as "hard."

This year, the actor was nominated for three personal Golden Globes. His personal nod for "The Descendants" marked his only acting nomination. The other two were for Best Director - Motion Picture and Best Screenplay - Motion Picture for "The Ides of March."

Clooney has been nominated for a total of 12 Golden Globes and has until this year won two - one for his role as Dr. Doug Ross on the medical drama series "ER" and one for his part in the 2005 film "Syriana." Clooney also won his first and only Oscar for the latter role and has been nominated for an Academy Award four times.

The actor can be seen next in the 3D thriller "Gravity," which stars fellow Oscar winner Sandra Bullock as a survivor of a botched space mission to repair the Hubble telescope. Her character tries to return to Earth and reunite with her daughter. "Gravity" is directed by Alfonso Cuaron and is set for release in November.

"It is the first time I've been in 3D and, hopefully, the last time," Clooney told USA Today in November 2011.

Meanwhile, check out a trailer for "The Descendants," which is available on DVD.
