Golden Globe Awards: Damian Lewis of 'Homeland' wins Best TV Actor - Drama
Damian Lewis has won the 2013 Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor In A Television Series - Drama for his role as Nicholas Brody in Showtime's "Homeland," marking his first win and third nomination.
The winners were announced at a ceremony in Los Angeles on January 13. The British actor beat Bryan Cranston of "Breaking Bad," Jeff Daniels of "The Newsroom," Steve Buscemi of "Boardwalk Empire" and Jon Hamm of "Mad Men."
"Thank you, gosh, thank you," Lewis said in his acceptance speech. "Of course the best journeys are always shared so I would like to share this with the best TV cast and crew working today."
He also dedicated his award to his wife, Helen, and his late mother.
Minutes after he won the prize, "Homeland" won the Golden Globe for Best Television Series - Drama.
In "Homeland," which debuted in 2011, Claire Danes plays bipolar CIA agent Carrie Mathison and Lewis plays her lover, Nicholas Brody, a U.S. Iraq War veteran who secretly became an Islamic terrorist while in captivity and who was elected as a congressman after his return home.
The show also stars "Princess Bride" actor Mandy Patinkin as Mathison's mentor and CIA superior. All three actors earned individual Golden Globe nods this year, marking Danes' fourth nod and Lewis' and Patinkin's third.
Last year, "Homeland" won that top Golden Globe as well as six Emmys, including the award for Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series for Lewis and Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series for Danes. In 2012, she also won an Golden Globe for her role, which marked her third overall. Lewis was nominated for one last year but lost to Kelsey Grammer of the Starz series "Boss."
Lewis earned his first Golden Globe nomination for his role in the 2001 mini-series "Band of Brothers."
The cast of "Homeland" celebrated the show's Golden Globe nominations at a Showtime party a day earlier, on January 12. Actor Navid Negahban, who plays the Islamic terrorist Abu Nazir, and Morena Baccarin, who plays Lewis' character's wife, also attended (Check out photos from the event).
