Giuliana Rancic, husband Bill to welcome 1st baby via gestational carrier
Giuliana Rancic and husband Bill are set to welcome their first child after years of fertility problems and her recent battle with breast cancer.
They revealed the news on NBC's "Today" show on Monday, April 23. The baby will be born to a gestational surrogate mother, meaning that the child will possess only the DNA of the Rancics.
"We are finally having a baby! Finally after years of trying," Rancic said.
"Yes, it's our embryo and we're using a gestational carrier to help bring it to term," her 40-year-old husband added. "It was pretty emotional. I mean, this was our last stop. I mean this was it. We had those two embryos we had banked, prior to learning about the breast cancer, and with the medicine she's going on, this was our last effort. Our prayers were answered.
Rancic, 37, said when her doctor told her about the news, it was "pretty much one of the best moments of my life, if not the best moment of my life."
"We've been trying for so long, we've been through so much, and especially, we had such a hard year last year with the breast cancer and everything and to finally get that call from the doctor that 'You're pregnant!' Or 'You're having a baby!' Well, I'm not quite pregnant, but you know what I mean - we're pregnant!" she said. "It was just ... another world."
The pair's fertility problems were documented on their Style network reality show "Giuliana & Bill" and Rancic, a host on sister channel E!, had also discussed it in the press.
She said on the ABC show "The View" in September 2010 that she had had a miscarriage and that she and her husband had planned to start in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments to try and conceive. The first two were unsuccessful. During a doctor's appointment to discuss a third IVF treatment, Rancic was diagnosed with breast cancer. She revealed the news in October 2011.
Rancic underwent a lumpectomy that was unsuccessful. She then had a double mastectomy to try to eliminate the cancer in December 2011. She and her husband said earlier this month they were still determined to have a child, saying they were willing to explore various options, including adoption and surrogacy.
The two are preparing to welcome their new addition in the late summer and have chosen not to reveal the baby's gender yet. Rancic lives in Los Angeles with her husband. She said her "baby mama" lives out of state and that they visit her and attend her OBGYN appointments every month.
"We see the baby growing and it's very exciting," she said.
