George Zimmerman to fight DMX in celebrity boxing match?
George Zimmerman could possibly square off against rapper DMX in an upcoming celebrity boxing match.
A spokesperson for the rapper confirmed to CNN that DMX is indeed negotiating a deal for the match. The spokesperson said in a statement to the news network on Wednesday, Feb. 5, "DMX has promised to 'beat his [expletive],' but no contract or paperwork has been signed or agreed to yet."
The event is being organized by Damon Feldman, who is the owner of Celebrity Boxing and who has put together boxing matches in the past involving notable names like Tonya Harding and Michael Lohan.
Zimmerman fatally shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, who was unarmed, in a February 2012 confrontation in Florida. In July 2013, he was found not guilty of second-degree murder and manslaughter. Wednesday would have marked Martin's 19th birthday.
According to CNN, which cites an interview Zimmerman did with Radar Online in January, Zimmerman said a mutual friend "put me in contact with Damon and provided me with an opportunity and motivation to get back in shape and continue with my weight loss goals and also be able to help a charity out."
Feldman told CNN on Wednesday that DMX was chosen out of 15,000 emails he received from people who wanted to face Zimmerman in the ring. Other details about the match, such as the date and location, are still being worked out.
A petition asking Feldman to drop the boxing match was launched on Change.org and has 264 signatures at the time of this writing.
