George Clooney's trip to war-torn southern Sudan, which he visited in October to help raise awareness about regional violence ahead of the African nation's January referendum on possible secession, is set to air on "Dateline NBC" on Friday.

The 49-year-old actor is a United Nations "Messenger of Peace" and has spoken about the issue on television in the past. Relations between residents of the northern part of Sudan, which is mostly Muslim, and the oil-rich south, whose people are mostly Christian, have soured since a 2005 peace deal and violence in the region has risen.

"It's an awful lot of people that are in danger and what are you doing to say to the next generation - that you stood by and did nothing?" Clooney says in the "Dateline NBC" special. "I think it can be stopped. We stopped it in 2005. We stopped it with diplomacy. We didn't stop it with soldiers. If we get involved now, we have a shot."

The peace agreement ended the country's longest civil war, which lasted for about 20 years and killed more than 2 million people. People in Sudan will vote in a January 9 referendum to decide if southern Sudan should be made a separate nation.

Check out a preview of George Clooney's hour-long Sudan report on "Dateline", which is set to air on NBC at 10 p.m. ET.
