Gene Hackman was hit by a car while biking in the Florida Keys on Friday.

The Oscar-winner was "taken to a hospital for routine tests after being bumped from behind while riding his bike today in the Keys," his rep Susan Madore told OnTheRedCarpet.com.

"He's suffered minor bumps and bruises from the collision and is already on his way home from the hospital," Madore continued.

The entertainment site TMZ originally reported that Hackman was "undergoing emergency surgery" after suffering "injuries to his head and body," but has since updated the report.

The 81-year-old retired actor won Oscars for his roles in the 1971 film "The French Connection" and the 1992 film "Unforgiven. " He has been nominated five times in total.

Most recently, Hackman has appeared in the cult favorite Wes Anderson film, "The Royal Tenenbaums" and in films like "Heist," "Heartbreakers" and "Replacements." He is perhaps best known as playing Lex Luthor opposite Christopher Reeves in the 1987 "Superman" film.
