Clive Mantle, who played Greatjon Umber on the HBO series "Game Of Thrones," recently underwent surgery after a man bit part of his ear off in an attack at a hotel in his native England.

The suspected assailant is 32 and has been charged with wounding with intent. He is due to appear in court next month.

Mantle, 55, had been staying at a Travelodge in Newcastle, where he has been performing in the play "The Ladykillers." The suspect has not commented. A Travelodge spokesman told BBC News that emergency services were called early on Sunday to investigate an incident involving two guests but offered no further details.

Mantle's spokesperson told BBC News that he believes the man had attacked the actor after he had asked hotel guests to keep the noise down.

"He is very shaken and shocked by what has happened, you don't expect this kind of thing to happen in a hotel," the spokesperson said. "The part of the ear that was bitten off was found and sewn back on. Mr Mantle said the police, ambulance and hospital staff were amazing."

As a result of his injury, Mantle will not yet be able to resume his role in an upcoming tour of "The Ladykillers." His rep told the UK Press Association that the actor was told he must not get makeup near his wound.

Mantle played the Northern lord Greatjon Umber during season 1 of "Game of Thrones" in 2011 and is also known for his role as a surgeon on the BBC medical drama "Casualty" and spin-off "Holby City.'
