FOX has renewed its sci-fi drama series "Fringe," which stars Joshua Jackson and Anna Torv, for a fifth season - which will be its last.

The network made the announcement on Thursday, April 26. It said it has ordered 13 new episodes. A teaser video for the new season was posted on YouTube.

"We are thrilled and beyond grateful that FOX - and our fans - have made the impossible possible: 'Fringe' will continue into a fifth season that will allow the series to conclude in a wild and thrilling way," co-creator and executive producer J.J. Abrams said in a statement from the network, which was posted on the show's Facebook page.

The current fourth season ends on May 11. The series, which follows a Federal Bureau of Investigation "Fringe Division" team, is a cult favorite but ratings have fallen more than 60 percent since its 2008 debut and especially after it was moved in January 2011 from Thursday to Friday nights, considered by many to be a "death slot" for shows.

It's most recent episode, which aired on April 20, was watched by about 3 million people and earned a rating of 1.0 among adults aged 18 to 49. During its first year, it had an average of 9 million viewers.

Kevin Reilly, President of Entertainment at the FOX Broadcasting Company, said at the Television Critics Association winter press tour in January that the network was losing money on "Fringe," which is expensive to produce, adding: "Please don't start the letter-writing campaign right now. I can't take that."

He said in FOX's Thursday statement that giving "Fringe" 13 new and final episodes "allows us to provide the climactic conclusion that its passionate and loyal fans deserve."

"The amazing work the producers, writers and the incredibly talented cast and crew have delivered the last four seasons has literally been out of this world," he said. "Although the end is bittersweet, it's going to be a very exciting final chapter."
