'Fifty Shades of Grey's Charlie Hunnam, Dakota Johnson had 'chemistry'
Why were Charlie Hunnam of "Sons of Anarchy" and Dakota Johnson cast as Christian Grey and lover Anastasia "Ana" Steele in the film adaption of E.L. James' erotic novel "Fifty Shades of Grey"? Well, chemistry, for one.
The author announced the news on Monday and spurred mixed reactions online. Producers Dana Brunetti and Michael De Luca took to Twitter to react to some of the criticism.
"Auditions were stunning, incredible chemistry!" De Luca tweeted.
"There is a lot that goes into casting that isn't just looks. Talent, availability, their desire to do it, chemistry with other actor, etc," Brunetti said on his Twitter page. "So if your favorite wasn't cast, then it is most likely due to something on that list. Keep that in mind while hating and keep perspective."
"Fifty Shades of Grey" is the first book of a series that became a worldwide sensation and a New York Times bestseller. Grey is a 27-year-old billionaire businessman who is into S&M sex and begins a contractual relationship with Steele, a graduating college senior, in which she agrees to become his submissive partner.
Hunnam, who is British, currently plays Jax on the FX biker series "Sons of Anarchy" and also played Nathan Maloney on "Queer as Folk" and Lloyd on "Undeclared." In the book, James cites Grey's "burning gray eyes" and "intense, smoldering stare." (While Hunnam, 33, has blue eyes, check out 7 PHOTOS of Charlie Hunnam giving his best smoldering stares).
Steele is described in the book as having brown hair and blue eyes. Dakota has sported both blonde and brunette hair in the past.
Mom Melanie Griffith reacts
The 23-year-old actress is the daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith and began her acting career about 13 years ago. She has appeared in the short-lived FOX series "Ben and Kate" and the film "The Social Network," in which she played a college student who hooks up with Justin Timberlake's character, Napster co-founder Sean Parker, and introduces him to Facebook.
"My beautiful child Dakota has been chosen to play Anna Steele in 50 Shades!!! Look out world! Here she comes!!! #proudmama," Griffith tweeted.
