Fantasia performs on 'American Idol,' what do you think?

04/01/2011 by Olivia Allin

Fantasia Barrino returned to "American Idol" on Thursday to perform the third single off her 2010 "Back to Me" album, "Collard Greens & Cornbread," and was sporting a whole new look.

Fantasia, 26, who won season three of "American Idol" appeared on-stage in a sequined red gown, slit up to the upper thigh and retro blonde curl. "Collard Greens & Cornbread" had an old-school soul feel to it and the eight-time Grammy nominee sang it with gusto.

After her performance, Ryan Seacrest asked Fantasia if she had any advice for the "Idol" contestants and the singer encouraged them to surround themselves with good people.

"You have to love what you do, which is music," Fantasia told the "Idol" hopefuls, "but it can throw you a lot of things that you're not ready for, so you've got to keep good people with you, and you have to keep people with you who are not just going to tell you 'yes' just because, people who are going to tell you when you're wrong and tell you when you're right and therefore, you can make it."

Since appearing on "American Idol," Fantasia has released three albums, "Free Yourself" (2004), "Fantasia" (2006) and "Back to Me" (2010) and won a Grammy in February 2011 for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for her single, "Bittersweet". The singer also appeared on Broadway in "The Color Purple" musical in 2007.

Several news outlets commented on Fantasia's weight gain following her appearance on "Idol," but in February, it was confirmed that she had signed on to play gospel singer Mahalia Jackson and was told she would have to gain 45 pounds by May, when the film is slated to start filming. Fantasia will also reprise her role as Celie in the film adaptation of "The Color Purple," which will be produced by Oprah Winfrey.
