02/22/2012 by Kristina Lopez

"Desperate Housewives" star Eva Longoria was one of the celebrities and public figures named as a national co-chair of President Barack Obama's reelection campaign.

"Harold and Kumar" franchise star Kal Penn, whose real name is Kapen Modi, was also announced as part of the 35 nominees. Longoria previously campaigned for Obama and Penn left his role on "House" to serve as the associate director of the White Hosue Office of Public Engagement from 2009 to 2011.

"I'm thrilled to be a National Co-Chair for @BarackObama's re-election campaign," Longoria Tweeted on February 22.

Other high profile individuals named include Caroline Kennedy -- the daughter of President John F. Kennedy -- Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel -- who was formerly the White House Chief of Staff to President Obama.

Obama made headlines earlier on Wednesday when he sang part of "Sweet Home Chicago," at an event hosted by actress Taraji P. Henson while Booker T. Jones served as music director and band leader.

The blues concert featured performances by Mick Jagger, B.B. King, Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, Jeff Beck, Gary Clark Jr., Shemekia Copeland, Buddy Guy, Warren Haynes, Keb Mo, Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks.

Longoria, whose divorce with NBA player Tony Parker was finalized in 2011, opened up in November about her recent romance with Eduardo Cruz, a 26-year-old singer and the younger brother of actress Penelope Cruz.

"Love did not work with that person. But it can work with another," the actress said. "The only thing I will say is I was very lucky to find Edu."
