Emmys 2013: Jeff Daniels of 'The Newsroom' wins Best Drama Actor

09/22/2013 by Corinne Heller

Jeff Daniels has won the 2013 Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series for his role as TV news anchor Will McAvoy in Aaron Sorkin's HBO series "The Newsroom," marking his first win and nomination.

The 58-year-old actor beat Hugh Bonneville of PBS' "Downton Abbey," Kevin Spacey of Netflix's "House of Cards," Bryan Cranston of AMC's "Breaking Bad," Jon Hamm of AMC's "Mad Men" and last year's winner, Damian Lewis of Showtime's "Homeland."

"The Newsroom" debuted in 2012. Daniels' character is the egotistical, justice-seeking lead news anchor of a cable news station. The series' season 2 finale aired on Sept. 15. "The Newsroom" was nominated for a total of three Emmys this year -- the first year in which it was qualified to compete.

Daniels is also known for his roles in the movies "Dumb & Dumber" and "Speed."

The 2013 Emmy Awards ceremony was held at L.A. Live's Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 22. The event was hosted by "How I Met Your Mother" star Neil Patrick Harris, who previously hosted the ceremony in 2009.
