Kyle Chandler has won the 2011 Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series for his role as Coach Eric Taylor in the show "Friday Night Lights," marking the actor's first win and third individual nomination.

Chandler, who celebrated his 46th birthday on Saturday, beat Steve Buscemi of "Boardwalk Empire," Michael C. Hall of "Dexter," Hugh Laurie of "House M.D.," Timothy Olyphant of "Justified" and Jon Hamm of "Mad Men," it was announced at Sunday's ceremony.

Chandler plays the coach of a high school football team on "Friday Night Lights." The show debuted on NBC in 2006 and ended its run after five seasons in February of this year on DirecTV's 101 Network.

The actor grew up in the town of Loganville, Georgia. He was discovered in the late 1980s by an ABC scout, who met him when he was a drama major at the University of Georgia. Chandler's first on-screen role was in the television film "Quiet Victory: The Charlie Wedemeyer Story," which was released in 1988.

The actor went on to appear on shows such as "Tour of Duty," "Homefront," "Early Edition" and "What About Joan." He was featured in the 1992 film "Pure Country" and in the 1996 movie "Mulholland Falls." In 2005, Chandler starred in the movie "King Kong."

A year later, he played the recurring part of Dylan Young on the ABC medical drama "Grey's Anatomy," which earned him his first Emmy nomination, and began his full-time role "Friday Night Lights." The actor has received a total of two Emmy nods for his part on the show.

Chandler also starred in J.J. Abram's sci-fi film "Super 8," which was released earlier this year and also starred Elle Fanning.

The 2011 Emmy Awards ceremony was held at L.A. Live's Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 18 and was hosted by "Glee" actress Jane Lynch. Check out a full list of nominations.
