09/18/2011 by Corinne Heller

Julie Bowen has won the 2011 Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series for her role as Claire Dunphy in the ABC sitcom "Modern Family," marking the actress' first win and second nomination.

The 41-year-old beat her co-star, Sofia Vergara, who plays her stepmother, as well as last year's winner - Jane Lynch of "Glee," Kristen Wiig of "Saturday Night Live" and Jane Krakowski of "30 Rock."

Bowen was also nominated for an Emmy last year for her role on "Modern Family." She plays the daughter of extended family patriarch Jay Pritchett, played by "Married With Children" actor Ed O'Neill, who also received an Emmy nod for his role this year. Ty Burrell, who plays Bowen's character's husband, took home the prize moments after her win was announced.

Bowen, a native of Maryland, began her on-screen acting career in the early 1990s with small parts on shows such as "Class of '96," "Acapulco H.E.A.T." and "Party of Five." In 1996, she appeared in the Adam Sandler comedy movie "Happy Gilmore." Bowen played the recurring role of Roxanne Please on the medical drama series "ER" in 1998.

Throughout the next decade, the actress had recurring roles on the shows "Ed," "LOST," "Weeds" and "Boston Legal" before she was cast in "Modern Family." Earlier this year, Bowen also appeared in the films "Jumping The Broom" and "Horrible Bosses," which also starred Jennifer Aniston.

Bowen stars in the upcoming movies "Conception" and "Knife Fight," the latter of which stars Jennifer Morrison of "House M.D."

"Modern Family" has been nominated 31 times since its 2009 debut. Last year, the show won six Emmys, including the awards including Outstanding Comedy Series.

The 2011 Emmy Awards ceremony was held at L.A. Live's Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 18 and was hosted by "Glee" actress Jane Lynch. Check out a full list of nominees and winners.
