Emmys 2011: Julianna Margulies of 'The Good Wife' wins Best Lead Drama Actress award
Julianna Margulies has won the 2011 Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series for her role as Alicia Florrick in "The Good Wife," marking the actress' second win and eighth individual nomination.
The 45-year-old actress beat out Connie Britton of "Friday Night Lights," Kathy Bates of "Harry's Law," Mireille Enos of "The Killing," Mariska Hargitay of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" and Elisabeth Moss of "Mad Men," it was announced at Sunday's ceremony.
Margulies thanked her husband, Keith Lieberthal, during her acceptance speech, saying: I love being your good wife and I'm so grateful you have no political aspirations."
In CBS' "The Good Wife," Margulies stars as Alicia Florrick, the wife of a disgraced state attorney, played by "Sex and the City" actor Chris Noth, who renews her career as a junior litigator. The CBS series premiered in 2009 and will begin its third season on September 25, 2011.
Margulies won her previous Emmy Award in 1995 in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Nurse Carol Hathaway in "ER," which she portrayed on and off from 1994 until 2009. She also earned a 2009 Golden Globe Award for her role in "The Good Wife."
Margulies was raised in New York City and obtained a liberal arts degree from Sarah Lawrence College, where she appeared in several plays on campus.
Margulies made her big screen debut in the 1991 film "Out for Justice" and her TV debut in a 1993 episode of "Law & Order."
The actress has since appeared in the short-lived FOX series, "Canterbury's Law" and guest-starred in "The Sopranos," "Ellen," "The Larry Sanders Show" and "Murder, She Wrote."
Margulies has also appeared in films like "Evelyn," "Ghost Ship," "The Darwin Awards," "Snakes on a Plane" and "City Island."
It was announced in June that Lisa Edelstein, who recently left her role as Dr. Lisa Cuddy on "House M.D.," landed a multi-episode arc on the upcoming third season of "The Good Wife." Her character has not yet been revealed.
The 2011 Emmy Awards ceremony was held at L.A. Live's Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 18 and was hosted by "Glee" actress Jane Lynch. Check out a full list of nominees and winners.
