Guy Pearce has won the 2011 Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Miniseries Or A Movie for his role as Monty Beragon in HBO's "Mildred Pierce," marking the actor's first Emmy win and nomination.

Pearce, a 43-year-old British actor, plays the love interest Kate Winslet's title character. He beat co-star Brian F. O'Byrne, who plays Pierce's husband Bert, as well as Tom Wilkinson of "The Kennedys" and Paul Giamatti and James Woods of 'Too Big To Fail."

"I got to have sex with Kate Winslet many many times and I didn't know it was going to result in this," Pearce joked during his acceptance speech.

The actor also thanked his real-life wife, also named Kate.

Minutes after accepting his Emmy, it was announced that Winslet had won the award for Best Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie for her role in "Mildred Pierce," marked her first Emmy win.

Pearce began his on-screen acting career in the late 1980s, starring in the soap operas "Neighbors" and "Home and Away" in Australia, where he grew up.

The actor is best known for his roles in films such as "Memento," is also known for his roles in film such as "Memento," "L.A. Confidential" and "The Hurt Locker," which won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2010.

Pearce recently filmed the thriller "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" with Katie Holmes, who was snubbed from this year's Emmy Awards.

She played Jacqueline Kennedy in the miniseries "The Kennedys," which earned 10 nominations, including individual nods for her co-stars Greg Kinnear, who plays U.S. President John F. Kennedy, and Barry Pepper, who plays Bobby Kennedy and took home the prize at Sunday's ceremony.

Both "The Kennedys" and "Mildred Pierce" were nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Miniseries Or Movie.

In "Mildred Pierce," Winslet plays the title role of a divorced, single mother who decides to open a restaurant business. Her new business venture does not help her strained relationship with her daughter, played by Evan Rachel Wood.

Guy Pearce plays Mildred Pierce's love interest, a playboy. The actor said he saved Winslet's life while filming a driving scene.

"Mildred Pierce" received a total of 21 nominations, including individual nods for Winslet and Wood. Wood said earlier this year that Winslet helped her film a full-frontal nude scene for the HBO miniseries.

Melissa Leo, who won an Oscar earlier this year for her supporting role in the film "The Fighter," plays Mildred Pierce's friend Lucy, while Mare Winningham portrays Ida, the title character's assistant.

Joan Crawford won an Oscar for her portrayal of Pierce in a 1945 movie, which was nominated for a total of six Academy Awards and which also starred Ann Blyth, Jack Carson and Eve Arden.

The 2011 Emmy Awards ceremony was held at L.A. Live's Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 18 and was hosted by "Glee" actress Jane Lynch. Check out a full list of nominations.
