Dorothy Hamill talks 'challenge' of competing on 'Dancing With The Stars' (Video)

02/26/2013 by Nichole Hamilton

Olympic legend Dorothy Hamill is set to take part in the 16th season of ABC's hit ballroom series, "Dancing With The Stars."

Hamill, who will be paired with professional dancer Tristan MacManus, talked to OTRC.com's George Pennacchio after the big cast reveal on February 24. The famed athlete explained how excited she is to take part in the dancing competition.

"Well, I'm excited to be trying to dance," Hamill explained to OTRC.com. "We'll see if you're going to call it dancing when I'm finished, but, I've got a great teacher, and I can't wait to get really started - it's going to be fun."

"I do like a good challenge, and I'm lucky that I have the best people to help me," Hamill continued. "It's better than going out and signing up for dance lessons at home, right?"

The 56-year-old athlete, who won the gold medal for figure skating at the 1976 Winter Olympics, explained how her years of performing experience are an advantage in this competition.

"I've kind of made all the dumb moves and falls and embarrassing things in my life in front of a live audience," Hamill explained. "So, I mean, if I do that again, it happens, but I'm going to try not to do that."

"The one thing that could help me is if I can figure out how to translate what I do know from ice-skating, because a lot of it is just the opposite," she continued. "If I can just translate that, and remember the steps - that would be okay."

The celebrities who will compete on the 16th season of the hit dancing series were revealed Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, on "Good Morning America."

The star-studded cast consists of five-time Grammy winner Wynonna Judd, comedian D.L. Hughley, "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star Lisa Vanderpump, boxer Victor Ortiz, teen actor and singer Zendaya Coleman, TV actor Ingo Rademacher, actor and comedian Andy Dick, gymnast Aly Raisman, "American Idol" finalist Kellie Pickler and Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Jacoby Jones, who was one of the Ravens' stars in their Super Bowl victory earlier this month.

Hamill explained that while she's confident and excited for the upcoming season, she's not getting too comfortable quite yet.

"I guess I'm fearless, but the reality is, that they're all young and talented and fit," she explained. "So I just, I know whatever my best is, who knows how good or bad it will be I guess I should say - who knows."

"There's fear there, but there's a lot more strength," her partner MacManus added in.

While the cast for the hit ABC show's 16th season was revealed, it was also announced who would not be returning to the ballroom floor. Pro-dancer Maksim Chmerskovskiy, who had previously stated he would appear on the upcoming season (Check out a Q & A and 15 facts about Maksim Chmerkovskiy), told OTRC.com that he is "eager to explore other opportunities that have been made possible because of Dancing with the Stars," adding: "I'm going to take this time to dive into producing and acting, while fulfilling my sponsorship obligations."
