Matt Osborne, a former wrestling star and original Doink The Clown, has died at age 55.

The World Wrestling Entertainment organization (WWE) announced the news on its website on Friday, June 28. The cause was not made public.

"Reports indicate that Matt Osborne, aka the original Doink the Clown, has passed away," the message said. "A rugged brawler in promotions like Mid-South Wrestling and World Championship Wrestling, Osborne made a major impact in WWE under the greasepaint of a prankster named Doink -- one of the most enduring personas of the early '90s."

Doink the Clown was portrayed by several wrestlers. Osborne, who also went by the name Matt Borne, was the first and joined the WWF in 1992. He left after a year. His character was known as the prankster of the group, which was later rebranded to become the WWE organization.

"WWE is saddened by the news of Osborne's passing," the group added. "Our deepest condolences go out to Osborne's family, friends and fans."
