Diego González Boneta joins 'Rock of Ages' cast

04/04/2011 by Olivia Allin

Diego González Boneta, who's guest-starred in "90210" and "Pretty Little Liars" has signed on to star in "Rock of Ages," OnTheRedCarpet.com has confirmed.

The newcomer will play Drew Boley, a 22 year old who moves to Los Angeles, hoping to succeed in the music industry who works as a bus boy in The Bourbon Room. For his role, Boneta will perform Foreigner's "Waiting For a Girl Like You," Twisted Sister's "I Wanna Rock," and he will do a duet with Julianne Hough, singing Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'," in New Line's adaptation of the Broadway musical.

Though hundreds auditioned for the role, "Rock of Ages" director Adam Shankman told Deadline.com that Boneta has the 'it' factor needed for the role.

"On top of his completely un-self conscious charm, he's a movie star the same as I felt when I auditioned Zac Efron, Channing Tatum and Liam Hemsworth," Shankman said. "It comes down to being able to identify the 'it' factor... he has it and is every inch a movie star."

Boneta began his career as a singer in Mexico and played pop star Javier Luna on "90210" and a country-club employee on "Pretty Little Liars." He also starred in the TV movie, "Mean Girls 2."

It was also rumored this week that Katy Perry might join her husband Russell Brand in the film as a barmaid/exotic dancer, Broadway.com reported.

Brand previously announced that he would join the cast as long as he would be able to see his wife enough and if his schedule allowed the time commitment and TheWrap.com confirmed with Shankman that Brand is in final negotiations for the role of a rocker.

In March, it was announced that Paul Giamatti signed on to play the manager of the rock band headed by Cruise's Stacee Jaxx character

Director Adam Shankman is also courting actress Amy Adams for the role of a journalist who beds Stacee Jaxx, Deadline.com reported. The role was originally offered to Anne Hathaway, who turned it down because of her prior commitment to "The Dark Knight Rises," portraying Catwoman.

Shankman, who also directed the musical film re-make of "Hairspray," announced on his Twitter on Wednesday that "Rock of Ages" would be released on June 1, 2012 and that rehearsals will start in two weeks. The Twitter-happy director also announced Baldwin's inclusion in the cast on the micro-blogging social network site.

Baldwin will be playing the role of Dennis Dupree, an ex-rocker who runs the Rock of Ages nightclub and can't let go of the past.

It was previously announced that "Dancing With the Stars" professional Julianne Hough would play opposite Cruise as Sherrie, a small-town girl who catches the eye of Cruise's character Stacee Jaxx, a rock star at the top of his career. Hough may also be seen in some provocative outfits since the character of Sherrie becomes a stripper.

The film will be based off the hit Broadway musical which featured classic 80s hair rock hits from bands like Journey, Bon Jovi, and Twisted Sister. Cruise's character is expected to sing Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive." His character is also a part of other numbers including Foreigner's "I Wanna Know What Love Is." The Broadway musical starred "American Idol" alum Constantine Maroulis.

The film is slated to begin shooting in May. Mary J. Blige has also signed on to the project to play a character called Justice.
