'Dexter' season 8 will be final season, Showtime confirms (Poll)
The eighth season of "Dexter," which is set to premiere this summer, WILL be the final one for the Showtime series, the cable network has confirmed.
The show debuted in 2006 and stars Michael C. Hall as the title character, a blood spatter analyst at the Miami Police Department who works secretly as a serial killer who only targets murderers and other major criminals. Jennifer Carpenter, his ex-wife, plays his sister and boss, Debra.
In March, Les Moonves, president and CEO of CBS, which owns Showtime, said at Deutsche Bank's DbAccess Media and Telecom conference that a new series for the cable channel, "Ray Donovan," "comes on with 'Dexter's' last season starting in June."
Showtime released a statement to OTRC.com on Thursday, April 18, that season 8 will indeed be the final installment for the show. It also announced the news on Facebook and released a sneak peak VIDEO of a scene from a new episode. (Warning: Contains expletives)
"'Dexter' is a landmark franchise for our network, and we cannot wait to unveil the conclusion of this series, as we know it, to the millions of passionate fans who have supported the show season after season," said David Nevins, President of Entertainment, Showtime Networks Inc. "We'd like to thank Michael, Jennifer, and 'Dexter's indomitable cast, executive producers, writers and crew for eight incredible seasons."
"Dexter" has won four Emmys, including one earned by John Lithgow, who gave a chilling guest performance as a serial killer and family man who challenges Dexter and murders one of his loved ones in season 4, which aired in 2009.
Around that time, Hall battled Hodgkin's lymphoma, a cancer of the blood, and made a recovery in 2010. That year, he won a Golden Globe for his role on "Dexter."
Season 8 premieres on June 30 at 9 p.m. ET and will also see the return of cast members David Zayas (Angel Batista), C.S. Lee (Vince Masuka), Desmond Harrington (Joseph Quinn) and James Remar (Harry, father of Dexter and Deb).
