Denise Richards has faith in Charlie Sheen, wants to protect their kids

(Photo courtesy of NBC) Denise Richards says she has faith in her ex-husband Charlie Sheen, who was hospitalized for several hours on Tuesday after he was found seemingly intoxicated in a hotel during the pair's visit to New York with their children.

Richards made her comments on The Today Show on Thursday in an interview aimed at promoting her role on the promoting her role on the Spike TV television series Blue Mountain State.

"I have a lot of faith in my ex and am concerned about our children and my concern is to keep them protected," she said. "That's where my priority is, is keeping them safe and secure and not know what went on. They're at an age where, thank god, they can't really figure it out and watch what's going on."

Sheen and Richards were married between 2002 and 2006 and are parents to daughters Sam, 6, and Lola, 5. She said that the two are raising their children together despite being separated.

Police sources told news outlets Sheen was intoxicated at the hotel and several reports said he was found naked. His spokesperson said the actor suffered an allergic reaction to medication.

"I wasn't screaming or freaking out," Richards said. "I did not call 911.The details of what went on in the room, what went on that night, I prefer to keep private and personal. My daughters are very unaware of what happened and I'm really trying to protect them. This is Charlie. If he wants to discuss it, then I'll let him do it."

"I'm just happy to be in New York," she said. I had this trip planned for months to promote the show. Charlie and I and the girls flew out here together. He was with us when we saw Mary Poppins. He and I took them to the museum and shopping. We had a great time. The girls are aware of anything so as far as they know they had a great time with their mom and dad in New York."

Richards also said Sheen will always be a part of her life, adding: "We are bonded together forever and no matter what the situation is, he's their dad. It was unfortunate what happened. I control my house and the girls and they're happy, beautiful children."
