Demi Lovato recently showcased her bikini body in a photo posted on her Twitter page on Monday, May 16, weeks after she underwent treatment in a clinic and revealed she had battled anorexia and bulimia.
The 18-year-old Disney Channel actress and singer revealed her past illnesses in media interviews in April, also adding that she suffers from bipolar disorder and struck a backup dancer on her tour with the Jonas Brothers.
Lovato left the tour in the fall of 2010. She underwent nearly three months of inpatient treatment and returned to her Los Angeles home in January.
"I've been working so hard to get healthy and fit.. I can't believe I'm about to do this but I'm so excited.. Here's my bikini time body!" Lovato said on her Twitter page, posting a photo of her in a white halter-top bikini.
The actress sports a tattoo under her chest, on her side, which reads: "You Make Me Beautiful," a lyric from from Bethany Dillon's song "Beautiful." Lovato said last year, when she debuted her new ink publicly, that the song changed her life.
"I'm excited how far I've come since being completely ashamed of my body," Lovato added. "I want any girl/guy out there who struggles with body image or confidence to know that it IS possible to find peace with yourself. It hasn't been easy, but it starts with a commitment to yourself.. Your mind.. And your soul. And trust me, I'm still working at it!! Haha."
Lovato told ABC News last month that she checked into Timberline Knolls - a residential treatment center in Illinois for women battling addiction and eating disorders.
She said that at the clinic, she found inspiration to get better by looking at a picture of her 9-year-old half sister Madison De La Garza, who plays Juanita Solis on the ABC drama series "Desperate Housewives." De La Garza is overweight herself.
Lovato also revealed that she began dealing with depression when she was a child and began cutting herself when she was 11.
On Tuesday, April 19, a Disney Channel spokesperson confirmed Lovato would not return to her show "Sonny With a Chance." The actress, who had played main character Sonny Munroe since the show began in 2009, had said she wanted to focus on her music and that she didn't think shooting the series would be "healthy" for her recovery.
