Demi Lovato living in a sober house for past year, report says
Singer Demi Lovato, who made a career comeback with new music and a gig on FOX's "The X Factor" following a publicized battle with substance abuse, eating disorders and emotional issues, has been living in a sober house, a report says.
A rep for the 20-year-old declined to comment about the news, which was reported by People magazine on Friday, January 11. The outlet said Lovato has been renting a room in a sober living facility in Los Angeles, miles away from where she maintains her own home, over the past year -- including while she filmed episodes of "The X Factor."
In 2010, Lovato, also known as the star of the Disney Channel show "Sonny With a Chance," dropped out of a concert series with the Jonas Brothers to seek medical treatment for what she called "emotional and physical issues" and spent about two months at a facility. She has since opened up about her personal struggles with drugs, alcohol, anorexia and bipolar disorder in print and television interviews.
"I'm not going to lie. I was self-medicating," she told Seventeen magazine in an interview published in January. "I was doing things like drinking and using [drugs], like a lot of teens do to numb their pain."
She also told the British magazine Fabulous in early 2012: "Promoters gave me drugs and alcohol in restaurants or clubs. They wanted me to come back so I would be seen there. They were basically kissing my [expletive]. I thought they were my friends. I thought I was having fun."
Last year, Lovato made her debut on Simon Cowell's FOX series "The X Factor" as a judge, as did fellow singer Britney Spears, who has also made headlines for her personal turmoil. Spears announced on Friday, January 11, that she is leaving the show to concentrate on her music career.
While many fans praised Lovato's appearances on the series, which often saw her spar playfully with Cowell, her future on the show is unclear. Ratings for season 2 of "The X Factor" were lower than the first. However, the show is set to return for a third season in the fall.
Lovato also made a comeback with her music -- her 2012 song "Give Your Heart a Break" was a bit hit on the radio, was covered on the FOX musical comedy show "Glee" and hit No. 1 on Billboard's Pop Songs Chart and No. 16 on its Hot 100 singles chart.
