09/20/2011 by Nichole Hamilton

David Arquette says competing in "Dancing with the Stars" with partner Kym Johnson is "beautiful" and truly makes him happy.

The 40-year-old actor and movie producer and Johnson, 35, received 18 out of 30 from the judges for their Viennese Waltz on the season 13 premiere of ABC's hit celebrity ballroom dancing series (read recap). The pair ended with a score that placed them safely in the middle of the competition.

"It was really beautiful to work with Kim, to have such a professional and great spirit guide me through his new world of dance," Arquette told OnTheRedCarpet.com after the premiere. "It's really a gift if you're honored to be able to do it, and it does make you really happy."

Johnson, who won the previous season with NFL star Hines Ward, said Arquette "has exactly what it takes to make it to the end," adding: "He's so determined and focused. Has a lot of fun as well. And he's got all the tools. He's a great dancer."

Contestant Chynna Phillips, known for her work with the musical trio 'Wilson Phillips,' and professional partner Tony Dovolani earned the top score of 22 out of 30 for the evening. Contestant J.R. Martinez, known for his service overseas and his work in the ABC daytime drama 'All My Children,' and partner Karina Smirnoff also earned a score of 22, tying the two pairs in first place for the premiere episode.

The 12 pairs return on Tuesday, September 20, and the first couple is expected to be eliminated. Arquette and Johnson plan to perform the Jive.

"David has exactly what it takes to make it to the end," Johnson told OnTheRedCarpet.com of her partner following the premiere. "He's so determined and focused, and he has a lot of fun - I mean he's got all the tools as well, he's a great dancer."
