Darren Criss of 'Glee': Gay or straight?
"Glee" newcomer Darren Criss says he is straight in real life, despite playing a gay character on the FOX musical comedy series.
The 24-year-old actor plays Blaine, an openly homosexual student at a private high school who fellow singing group member Kurt, played by Chris Colfer, has a giant crush on.
"I think it's more empowering to everybody, including myself, if I'm articulate about identifying myself as a straight male playing a gay character," Out magazine quoted Criss as saying. "Ultimately, that's more powerful for both communities."
The actor told the magazine that he grew up in San Francisco and was a big musical theater geek.
Last week's episode saw Blaine and his singing group serenading a Gap employee he has his eyes on, much to Kurt's dismay.
"We have a lot of fun things happening with the Blaine and Kurt thing," Criss told OnTheRedCarpet.com at the recent 2011 Grammy Awards.
Murphy told Out magazine that he planned to keep the characters "apart as long as possible," adding: "Blaine will openly question whether bisexuality is real. I think that some people will love that discussion and some will not love it. I want to treat that relationship like we treat all the other relationships on the show. I want it to be as flawed and as exposed as everyone else's."
