Darren Criss of 'Glee' in talks to replace Daniel Radcliffe in Broadway musical
Darren Criss, who plays Blaine Anderson on "Glee" is in talks to take over for Daniel Radcliffe in the Broadway musical, "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" when the "Harry Potter" actor's contract ends in January.
On the FOX musical comedy series, Criss' character is a leading singer of the rival club that challenges the main glee club. If he signs on for "How to Succeed," he would perform at least a three-week run as the lead character J. Pierrepont Finch, before returning to his TV and film obligations, Playbill reports.
Producers are looking for a third replacement Finch to perform in the late winter and spring. The production has had a successful box office run at Broadway's Al Hirschfeld Theatre. During the week of July 17, the production gross was $1.7 million.
Insiders told Playbill that Radcliffe has enjoyed the show so much that he is not interested in a vacation before the end of the year. Radcliffe made his Broadway musical debut in the revival of the 1962 show on March 27.
The 21-year-old "Harry Potter" actor, who famously stripped down to star in the play "Equus" in London and Broadway in the past few years, plays Finch, a window washer who uses the titular book to climb the ranks at the World Wide Wickets Company in New York City.
The musical is based on a satirical self-help book and stars film and television star John Larroquette as J.B. Biggley, the president of the firm, and theater actress Rose Hemingway as secretary Rosemary Pilkington.
On "Glee," Criss is also the love interest of main character Kurt, played by Chris Colfer. Criss was made a regular cast member for the show's current second season.
The 24-year-old native of San Francisco native has said that as a child, he listened to cast record recordings of musicals such as "Les Miserables" and works by Andrew Lloyd Webber, the man behind the show "Phantom of the Opera," as well as pop songs. When he was older, he began writing and performing music.
