'Dancing with the Stars' dance-by-dance recap: Happy 200th episode, 'Dancing With the Stars'!

11/01/2010 by Cari Skillman

'Dancing With the Stars' logo (ABC)Back in June of 2005, ABC put on a little reality competition show to fill six weeks during the summer.  Little did anyone know that five years later this would be the number one rated show on TV.   And Dancing with the Stars brought back quite a group of veterans for the event; not just to help celebrate, but also to help judge!

Check out the recap below but be warned, spoilers ahead!

Group Competition

A two team, cha cha "dance off" kicked off week seven.  The six remaining celebrities were drafted into groups by their team captains:  former champs (and Olympians) Kristi Yamaguchi and Apolo Ohno.   Kristis kids included Rick Fox, Kyle Massey, and Bristol Palin.  On Apolos team we found Brandy, Jennifer Grey, and Kurt Warner.  Each group learned their own version of a high energy cha cha, and they all rocked.

Team Kristi danced to Michael Jacksons Working Day and Night, which included little bits of MJs fancy footwork here and there. The judges gave them kudos and scores of 8s across the board for a total of 24 out of 30.

Team Apolo came out fighting with its own version of a cha cha.  Head judge Len Goodman said the trio had all upped their game this week and they received scores of 9-9-9 for a total of 27 out of 30.  These scores were added to their individual scores for a grand total for the evening.

Brandy
A hot foxtrot done by Gilles Marini in season 8 is the iconic dance Brandy must use for inspiration for week seven.   Brandy and Maksim Chmerkovskiy get the Fever in a big way, and pour themselves into learning a sexy, sultry dance.  The judges were bowled over, with Len Goodman even handing out a rare 10.  Individual dance scores:  37 out of 40, for a grand total of 64 out of 70

Jennifer Grey
Jennifer and Derek Hough were asked to emulate a tango first performed by Drew Lachey , the champ of season two. Jennifer didnt seem intimated by the dance, shes just mentally and physically exhausted and thats what caused a mini-breakdown during rehearsals.  Jenn even went to her doctor, who reminded Grey she is 50 and her body will fatigue faster than when she was younger.  True words, perhaps, but hard to hear for any of us pushing 5-0!  Jennifer checked her worries at the door and brought an intense tango to the floor.  The judges loved it, with Carrie Ann Inaba telling her we all love to see a good comeback.  Lachey offered wise words for the following weeks:  trust your partner!  Individual dance scores:  37 out of 40, for a grand total of 64 out of 70

Kurt Warner
The inspiration for Kurt and Anna Trebunskayas tango was that of another football great:  Emmitt Smith. Kurt said he wants to be able to capture Emmitts spirit on the dance floor, but keeps finding himself getting frustrated by Anna always saying its easy! Kurt gave her a taste of her own medicine by taking her to football practice with the Arizona Cardinals! Kurt brought his A game, with the judges giving him comments like "mission accomplished, dapper, strong, sharp, and special".  Individual dance scores:  34 out of 40, for a grand total of 61 out of 70

Rick Fox
Helio Castroneves yellow-suited quickstep was the inspiration dance for Rick and Cheryl Burke.  Rick said what he liked best about Helio is the fact that he was not afraid to let loose and have fun on the dance floor.  Ricks girlfriend, actress Eliza Dushku, stopped by rehearsal to show Cheryl her beau really does have a goofy, playful side, and Rick tells us that is exactly what he will try to remember to bring to competition night.  The judges gushed over their quickstep, with Carrie Ann saying it was his best dance ever.  Individual dance scores:  37 out of 40, for a grand total of 61 out of 70

Kyle Massey
Kyle and Lacey Schwimmer performed a paso doble inspired, and judged by, Mel B.  Its a tough, aggressive dance, which does NOT come naturally to nice-guy Kyle.  But he manages to turn down his more playful side and tries to channel Mels partner, Maksim.  Kyle even shows up to rehearsal one day with no shirt and only a vest, a la Maks, complete with painted on abs to help finish off the picture.  Kyle does wear a shirt for the competition, and nails the dance in his own way.  Len said it was his best performance to date, and Mel B said she was blown away, even calling Kyle very sexy.   Individual dance scores:  35 out of 40, for a grand total of 59 out of 70

Bristol Palin
Another young woman with famous parents served as Bristols inspiration:  Kelly Osbourne.  Bristol said she was intimidated to perform Kellys Viennese waltz because it was so memorable. Her partner Mark Ballas told Bristol the biggest thing she needs to learn from Kelly is to smile, be expressive, and be herself.  The judges were very pleased with the dance, calling it endearing and poetic.  Individual dance scores:  33 out of 40, for a grand total of 57 out of 70
