'Dancing with the Stars' Recap: Two Dances Down, One to Go
Who's going to win on "Dancing With The Stars?" It's anybody's guess! It's kind of nice that this season there hasn't been one clear-cut frontrunner from the beginning (paging Nicole Scherzinger). Kirstie Alley, Chelsea Kane, and Hines Ward all have their strengths and all three showcase their talent in a big way for part one of the finals.
Each of the three couples took the dance floor twice: once with a "judge's choice" dance, and again with the fan favorite freestyle! Here's the scoring breakdown, from highest to lowest. Spoiler Alert!
Chelsea Kane and Mark Ballas- 59 out of 60
The judges wanted to see the youngest couple attempt their samba again. Carrie Ann Inaba stopped by rehearsal to give them a few tips. Basically, she wants Chelsea to quit being so perky, loosen up, and tap into her sensual side. Apparently she did that, because she got a score of 29 out of 30. Bruno Tonioli called her an ultra sexy bombshell; Carrie Ann simply said "hot, hot, hot!"
In past seasons, Mark has knocked it out of the park with his freestyle choreography and he did a great job again tonight. They two wanted to play off the youth factor and do lots of funky moves... and then their hands and feet light up! The judges love it and give them a perfect score.
Hines Ward and Kym Johnson- 59 out of 60
It's the quickstep that Hines and Kym are asked to redo for the finale. Head judge Len Goodman is their coach and he walked into rehearsal swinging a Steelers "terrible towel." Len said his main goal was to focus on Hines' footwork. The pair just glides around the dance floor and you can't help but smile when you watch them. Bruno said it's like watching a production on Broadway. They earn a 29 out of 30.
Kym chose a fun theme for the freestyle: a half time show! She dresses like a cheerleader, Hines is a drum major, and there are lots of steps and lifts and throws that again are pure fun. Touchdown! Another perfect 30!
Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy- 54 out of 60
Kirstie is also asked to perform the samba again, but her notes from Bruno are very different than the ones Carrie Ann gave Chelsea. Where Chelsea needed to be more sensuous, Kirstie needs to be sharper and as Bruno said "take her moments." It's a very different style of samba than Chelsea and Mark did, but equally entertaining and Len told Kirstie she absolutely deserved to be in his finale. All three judges gave them a "9" for a total of 27.
For their freestyle, Maks said Kirstie may be the oldest dancer but he wasn't going to let her use that as a crutch. She's turning cartwheels at 60-years-old for goodness sake! The dance starts out sweet and flowing, then she rips off her dress to reveal a much toned-up body and gets into a more athletic dance that even has a few lifts. Bruno told her that ten weeks ago, he never would have dreamed she could do a lift, but he appreciates that she went for it, and offered her nothing but respect. Len and Kirstie also complimented them on taking risks while still utilizing proper dance steps, and again the scores were "9's" across the board.
It's not over yet! The three couples will dance again Tuesday night, performing their personal favorite routine of the season It will be scored only by the judges. And then during the results show, we'll learn who takes home that coveted mirror ball trophy for Season 12.
