'Dancing With The Stars': Dance By Dance Recap - first perfect score
Our first perfect score of the "Dancing with the Stars" season! And Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Len Goodman literally kiss and make up! It came during a double the fun night, with each team taking the floor two times: once with an individual dance and again with the 'instant jive.'
So who scored the perfect 30? It's no surprise to learn that honor goes to J.R. Martinez!
Here's a rundown of the night's dances, with scores from highest to lowest:
J.R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff - 30 out of 30 for waltz / 30 out of 30 for instant jive / Total: 60 out of 60
Waltz: I think everyone in the ballroom knew J.R.'s waltz was perfection. He and Karina Smirnoff had the audience members on their feet about half-way through the dance! J.R. was extra determined this week, after falling to the middle of the pack last week. He was also aware that they were doing the same dance at Ricki Lake and Derek Hough and there would inevitably be comparisons.
Head judge Len Goodman said that while last week J.R. retreated, this week he came back with guns blazing. Carrie Ann Inaba said the waltz was "magic," and Bruno Tonioli called it divine. Score: 30 out of 30
Instant Jive: The dancing Gods are with J.R. tonight as he scores a second perfect 30 for his instant jive. It's the dance they did in week two (and did not receive high marks!) so both J.R. and Karina wanted to redeem themselves. They did. Carrie Ann said they are in a class by themselves for this round. Score: 30 out of 30
Ricki Lake and Derek Hough - 28 out of 30 for waltz / 24 out of 30 for instant jive / Total: 52 out of 60
Waltz: Ricki has gotten to the point where she can focus on and worry about small things, like her shoulders rising up, because you know she's going to nail the choreography and the emotion of the dance. She's tired; she's sore; she's injured, but she's not giving up.
The waltz Derek choreographed fit her perfectly. And if it weren't for those shoulders, she might have earned a perfect score. She did earn one ten, from Bruno, who called the dance "deliciously dreamy." Score: 28 out of 30
Instant Jive: Ricki heads to the opposite end of the dance spectrum with the jive. It really was well done, but not perfect, and I fear, not up to the standard she has set for herself. The judges gave them 8's across the board. Score: 24 out of 30
Hope Solo and Maksim Chmerkovskiy - 27 out of 30 for Quickstep / 24 out of 30 for instant jive / Total: 52 out of 60
Quickstep: What happened to Maks? He starts the pre-taped segment of the solo dance more or less apologizing to Hope for being too rough and competitive during the first seven weeks. Then at the end of the instant jive, he gave Len a kiss on the cheek! We also saw Maks take Hope home for a Chmerkovskiy family dinner where we learned that Maks is a Mama's boy.
The duo performs an in-sync, fast moving routine that the judges all praised; both Bruno and Len called it Hope's best dance of the season. Score: 27 out of 30
Instant Jive: Like J.R., Hope's first stab at the jive didn't go so well so she also wanted to redeem herself. Both Bruno and Carrie Ann had nice things to say about the dance, and then Len surprised everyone by going crazy... in a good way. He called the dance fantastic, everything a jive should be, and bloody brilliant. That's when he got the kiss from Maks! Score: 25 out of 30
Rob Kardashian and Cheryl Burke - 27 out of 30 for Quickstep / 24 out of 30 for instant jive / Total: 51 out of 60
Quickstep: Rob gets more relaxed and confident with every week. He's learning to put both Cheryl's instructions, and the judge's criticism, to good use. When he's told to focus on frame, technique, or tucking in his butt, he listens.
Rob is absolutely the most improved player. Len called this his best dance so far, Bruno said he showed incredible improvement and Carrie Ann said he was an ideal contestant. Score: 27 out of 30
Instant Jive: Rob kept his good spirits, and his composure, up for the second round of dancing. The judges love his energy, especially Carrie Ann, who made note of his booty shaking. Score: 24 out of 30
Nancy Grace and Tristan MacManus - 24 out of 30 for Tango / 20 out of 30 for instant jive / Total: 44 out of 60
Tango: Nancy knows she's the underdog and is not going down without a fight. Most of her fights are with her partner Tristan, but that's another story.
Tom Bergeron calls them "the Bickersons" and you might hope that would translate to some passion for their tango. Alas, it did not. Len said she's hit a plateau.
Instant Jive: But that's nothing compared to what he said for her instant jive. Len said Nancy is living a Cinderella story; she's come to the ball, but it's midnight and time to go home. If you missed the cutaway shot of Nancy's son making a face at this - it's priceless! Score: 20 out of 30
Will the fans save Nancy for another week? We'll find out tomorrow on the Results show!
