'Dancing With The Stars': Dance By Dance Recap - Broadway night brings the drama
You can't go wrong with a show that opens with singing nuns dressed in sequins. There's no question about it -- it's Broadway week on "Dancing With The Stars." Across the board, all seven remaining stars told us that they are big fans of Broadway musicals, so you know this week will have a huge "fun factor" but what about the dance factor? It is week six, so expectations are high! And so are emotions.
As good as several of the dances were, I'm sure what everyone will be talking about is the spat between pro dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Head Judge Len Goodman. Maks was fed up with what he thinks has been uneven feedback from the judge's table. When Len starts to say he's been in the business for 50 years, Maks pipes up with "maybe it's time to get out." Oh no he didn't! That gets everyone talking at once, mostly about being respectful. And this is where host/referee Tom Bergeron earns his salary!
Here's a recap of the individual dances, from highest to lowest score:
Ricki Lake and Derek Hough - 29 out of 30
I know how to describe Ricki and Derek's quickstep: wow! Need more? Outstanding! Not enough? Beautiful! Ricki's drop in the judge's rankings last week obviously lit a fire in her belly. She worked really hard during rehearsals, and knows that she's chasing J.R. Martinez for the top spot. Derek choreographed a fabulous routine to "Luck Be a Lady" from the classic "Guys and Dolls."
How much was it loved? Not only did they receive a standing ovation from the audience, they had judges Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba on their feet, too! Len Goodman may have stayed in his seat, but he did tell Ricki that she doesn't need to rely on luck when she has that much talent.
J.R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff - 29 out of 30
It's dueling quicksteps with the top two competitors! But J.R. knows he's in the thick of this race and he's not about to let up. Karina tells him she has choreographed the most ambitious routine not just of this season, but EVER on her time with "DWTS." But she also lets him know she wouldn't do it if she didn't think he could handle it!
They were flying across the dance floor to "Nowadays" from "Chicago" and the judges had nothing but praise. It definitely has come down to a "two dancer" race!
Nancy Grace and Tristan McManus - 24 out of 30
Nancy received her first "9" of the season for her fox trot (from Carrie Ann) and with that score came another first: Nancy said "I'm speechless." How did Tom Bergeron let that one go by him?
Nancy and Tristan McManus danced to "Always Look at the Bright Side of Life" from "Spamalot" and the fun Monty Python spirit came across on the dance floor. It did look as though the two had another rough week in rehearsals, though; that Nancy sure likes to argue! Luckily, Tristan has the patience of a saint.
David Arquette and Kym Johnson - 23 out of 30
David channeled his best inner Travolta for a quickstep to the "Grease" tune "We Go Together." And Kym looks exactly like Olivia Newton-John! David is about to jump out of his skin with excitement at the prospect of this dance. He loves that the quickstep is supposed to be filled with over-the-top energy... that's him in real life.
He worked really hard during the week and said he hopes to surprise a lot of people this week, including himself. They start with the hand jive and clearly have the audience in their corner; but their timing was just a bit off and the judges had to call them out on that.
Rob Kardashian and Cheryl Burke - 22 out of 30
Each week, Rob keeps coming more and more into his own. He's probably getting tired of hearing that from people; his own Mom came to rehearsal to tell him she saw him becoming more of a man over the course of these past several weeks. Mama Bear Kris got a little weepy talking about how proud she was of her little boy; then she got tough and told him to pull out all the stops, get out there, and kick butt.
Cheryl Burke finally got him to learn how to shake his booty and the two did a very fun cha cha to the "Jersey Boys" musical's "Walk Like a Man." The only thing that's a little annoying; the sideshow of screaming Kardashians in the audience; that group is LOUD.
Hope Solo and Maksim Chmerkovskiy - 20 out of 30
On the good side: great song, "Seasons of Love" from "Rent." On the not so good side: Hope's costume, including clunky boots. During rehearsal, Hope lets us know she is frustrated that she hasn't been able to bring her scores up. She still has a problem with bringing sexy back to the dance floor. So Maks brings in three of the young dancers from the "troupe" to help show her how it's done. We all discover Hope is a visual learner and when she can follow the lead of the other women, she does much better. Alas, the next day when the pro women are gone, Hope is back to her athletic (not so sexy) ways. She and Maks have another argument about losing faith, losing hope, giving up, yadda yadda yadda.
The judges seem to understand they shouldn't be quite so mean (or as Maks said "judgmental") in their criticism. But they still didn't really like what Hope brought to the floor. The fireworks came when Len was speaking, and told Hope this was her worst dance of the season. That's what set Maks off and he had a good long rant. The audience favorite said something I'm sure he'll be explaining for days; paraphrasing, he said this is my show, I helped make this show; he's loved all the other pros, all the other celebrities throughout the years, and basically, they are all tired of being picked on!
Chaz Bono and Lacey Schwimmer - 19 out of 30
As great as Ricki's week was, Chaz's was equally bad. To say his rehearsal week was rough would be an understatement. Even Lacey seems to be losing her patience with him. Chaz's pro partner told him he needs to focus, step it up, and show some growth.
The judges basically said the same thing. He did a tango to the title song from "Phantom of the Opera" and Len commended Chaz for being able to get through the whole routine. But that was about it.
Who'll go home? We'll find out the next eliminated couple Tuesday night!
