Damon Lindelof talks 'Star Trek 2': 'The bar is very high'
Though former "Lost" executive producer Damon Lindelof has had his hands full working on the mysterious film "Prometheus" with director Ridley Scott, the writer and producer says his focus has now shifted to tackling the sequel to "Star Trek," the film that served as a successful relaunch of the franchise.
"Right now my days and nights are consumed by 'Star Trek 2,'" Lindelof told OnTheRedCarpet.com host Rachel Smith at Comic-Con in San Diego on Thursday.
Lindelof went on to explain that there was a slight delay on the development of the sequel's script because producer J.J. Abrams was busy with "Super 8," while "Star Trek" screenplay writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman "sort of had their own empires to manage."
"Now finally the four creative minds that sort of made the first movie what it was are all back in a room together and I think that was the only way we wanted to do it and we have been doing it," Lindelof said.
"I think that the bar is very high. We're not going to be satisfied with 'Oh this is fine,'" he added. "If an idea isn't mind-blowing, or super cool, or doesn't present the 'Star Trek' universe in a way that maybe people haven't seen before ... but you also sort of have to pay homage to the fans that have stuck with this amazing franchise for 40 years."
Lindelof reveals, "It's been very, very tricky but I think we've finally broken through and figured out what the movie is going to be."
The first film, which starred Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock, revived the franchise and became a box office hit in 2009, grossing $257 million domestically. The sequel has a tentative release date set for June 29, 2012.
When OnTheRedCarpet.com correspondent Jacob Burch spoke with Abrams in June, the creative mastermind remained tight-lipped about the project. "We are hard at work on the script and I think we've got some amazing stuff, and hopefully we'll have something to talk about soon," he said.
