'DWTS' Zendaya gets hugs, chips after finale (Video)
Zendaya may not have won "Dancing WIth The Stars" but she did make two little girls very happy after the season 16 finale, days after she said she hoped her experience on the ABC show would inspire kids to follow their dreams.
The 16-year-old star of the Disney Channel series "Shake It Up!" and partner Val Chmerkovskiy came in second, while "American Idol" alum Kellie Pickler and Derek Hough took home the Mirror Ball Trophy. Both pairs were frontrunners throughout the season.
Zendaya talked to OTRC.com after the finale on Tuesday, May 21, and her interview was photo-bombed by two girls who rushed to give her hugs.
"Want a SunChip?" one of the girls said, holding out an orange bag of the crunchy snack (Harvest Cheddar flavor).
"I'm good, thank you," Zendaya replied.
"I've always wanted to meet you!" the girl added, hugging her.
"I love you!" the other girl said.
Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman, who placed fourth with partner Mark Ballas, joined in as well, giving Zendaya a hug.
"You were amazing. Your Jive was awesome. I love you," Raisman said.
Zendaya told OTRC.com, regarding all the love: "That, right there ... that's why I do. It's not for anything other than to inspire those kids and I'm able to do that and I was able to do that with this show, so it's really all I wanted."
"Things happen for a reason and I truly believe that and this has been a way for me to inspire kids and a way for me to reach out to people that I never would have been able to," she said. "It's not always necessarily about being the one that gets to take it all home. It's about the person that makes the most difference, makes the most impact and was able to help people the most and that's what I feel what I was able to do so that's what I'm happy about."
Chmerkovskiy, who like the other pro dancers, usually talks to the press with their celebrity partners, did not join her during the interview.
He had suffered an injury to the face earlier in the week and spent time in the hospital on Monday getting stitches. The four finalists and their partners flew from Los Angeles, where the show is filmed, to New York to appear on ABC's "Good Morning America" on Wednesday. Due to his medical treatment, Chmerkovskiy needed extra time after the finale to pack, OTRC.com has learned.(Reporting by George Pennacchio of KABC Television, which produces the entertainment show "On The Red Carpet" (check for local TV listings).
