Courteney Cox gets candid about her separation from David Arquette
Actor David Arquette has talked openly to the press about his separation from Coutrney Cox, including intimate details about their marriage woes. Now Cox is giving her side about the separation in an interview with Harper's Bazaar for their April issue.
"I think every relationship has a point where you stop and reevaluate. Are you happy? Have you grown together or apart? What do you share interests in? I think that's a normal thing to do, but it's so much harder when it's done publicly," Cox says.
"We loved each other so much, and if anything I feel like we've been extremely successful at marriage. If it doesn't work out, I will have huge waves of pain about failing in that department," the "Cougar Town" star added. "But right now I don't have that because I don't know what the future holds and I guess because I have strong feelings for him."
The actress explains, "The thing is, when you get older, it's more about compatibility than it is about love." She adds, "It's nothing with David. It's just what I'm searching for."
The couple met on the set for the 1996 horror film "Scream." Arquette, 39, and Cox, 46, married in June 1999 and have a daughter named Coco. They announced in October 2010 they had agreed to a trial separation.
Arquette had said on The Howard Stern Show on SIRIUS XM satellite radio in December that he had been drinking a lot and was heartbroken over the split. In January, Arquette spent time in rehab for alcohol abuse and depression.
The actor had spoken about his love life on Stern's show soon after he and Cox announced their trial separation and said the two had not been intimate in months. He later apologized for revealing too much.
"You can't really get mad at David because he's not a malicious person," Cox said about her estranged husband's appearances on the show. "He was dealing with things the best way he could."
She adds, "I don't know what's going to happen, but I don't think he'll be doing more Howard Stern any time soon. He's not out to harm. But I'm his biggest protector. I can't help it."
As for rumors that she cheated on Arquette with her "Cougar Town" co-star Brian Van Holt, who plays the ex-husband of Cox's character on the ABC sitcom, the actress tells the magazine, "He's a really good friend of mine, so I don't care. It just doesn't matter. He's a great guy, and he's definitely been a part of my support system."
