Cindy Crawford: My 10-year-old daughter Kaia is 'too young' for modeling career
Cindy Crawford doesn't want her 10-year-old daughter to model anymore, at least not until she is 17.
Kaia Crawford, who is the supermodel's daughter with husband Rande Gerber, made her modeling debut last month by appearing in ads for Versace's pre-teen fashion line, Young Versace.
"At this point, she's too young to pursue a career," Cindy Crawford said about her daughter in an recent interview with The Daily Front Row. "There aren't even a handful of jobs for a 10-year-old girl. But if she's 17 and wants to try it, of course, what can I say?"
"She's really into singing and acting," the supermodel added. "She kind of jokingly said - I'm not even sure if it was jokingly - 'I might model first because you don't have to know how to do anything, but then I want to be a baby nurse.'"
In one Young Versace ad, Kaia Crawford stares at the camera with a neutral expressing while stuffing her hands into the breast-level pockets of a short, leather jacket, which she wears over a white, printed top and a short, black, flared skirt with an Egyptian-style design.
The first Young Versace boutique recently opened in Milan, Italy. Crawford, who began her own modeling career when she was about 16, was considered to be a muse to the late Gianni Versace and said in a statement last month that she was "thrilled" that her daughter could also model for the fashion house.
Donatella Versace said her daughter inherited more than her mother's good looks.
"Like her mother, Kaia has a very special gift. The camera really, really loves her," Versace said in a statement. "Having Cindy on-set for the shoot took me back to all the amazing [Richard] Avedon shoots we worked on together. It was such a special treat watching Kaia walk in her mother's footsteps!"
Crawford told The Daily Front Row the designer was the one who approached her about having her daughter star in the campaign.
"Kaia isn't modeling, per se - she doesn't have a portfolio or an agent," the supermodel added. "I think Donatella thought it would be fun because I had worked with Versace so much in the '80s and '90s ... So she did one picture and it ended up going everywhere! I didn't quite understand how much media play it would get. They were very smart to choose her."
"Once she actually stepped on set, I definitely tried to stay back," Cindy Crawford said. "I could hear and see everything, but I wanted it to be about her - not me. She takes direction well ... She's done little modeling things with me, but it was always with me, and this was just her. And I really wanted her to have that experience."
Crawford, who turns 46 on February 20, and Gerber, a 49-year-old former model, have been married since 1998 and also have a 12-year-old son named Presley. Crawford was previously married to actor Richard Gere for almost four years. They have no children together.
Crawford, known for her signature facial mole, was most popular in the 1990s and has graced the cover of magazines such as People, Vogue, W and Playboy. In 1993, Crawford, then 27 and a Revlon spokesmodel, appeared on the cover of People's "Most Beautiful" issue (see which celebrities were named "Most Beautiful" over the past 21 years).
She quit modeling full time in 2000 but still occasionally appears in ads. In recent years, she has made guest appearances on shows such as "According To Jim" and "Wizards of Waverly Places." She also launched her own home furnishing line and spends time doing charity work.
