The 35-year-old actress has been praised by a UK minister as a positive role model for women and her character, the office manager in a struggling New York City ad firm, commands attention with her striking looks and assertive attitude.

"Women hit on me," Hendricks told Harper's Bazaar, which features her on its November 2010 cover. "My husband thinks it's so odd that so many women hit on me."

She said gay men also flirt with her, adding: "They say to me, 'Well, I'm not straight, but if I was...' I think it's so flattering."

Mad Men is set in the 1960s and stars Jon Hamm as Don Draper, a troubled, boozing, often womanizing and usually always charismatic partner in the ad firm. The AMC drama series is on its fourth season and has won 13 Emmys. Prior to Mad Men, Hendricks had recurring roles in shows such as ER and Firefly.

Hendricks stars in a sexy fall 2010 ad campaign for clothing manufacturer London Fog, which said the actress was chosen for her "glamorous and sophisticated persona".

Hendricks, who is five foot eight, says an agent once told her to lose 10 pounds when was a model and a size 4.

"I remember thinking, 'You're crazy!'" she said. "I said okay, but I didn't do it. It seems that models have gotten smaller. I was a 4, but now they're a 0 or 2."

Hendricks' figure has also been criticized in the press. The New York Times once quoted a stylist who referred to her as a "big girl" and bashed the television star for her peach-colored Christian Siriano gown she wore at the 2010 Golden Globe Awards.

"To say something like that and put it next to a distorted picture discredits you entirely," Hendricks said. "And it hurt my feelings. I thought that dress was stunning. I stand by that dress to this day. I had just gotten back from my honeymoon, and I felt beautiful in those pictures."

"I was smiling and beaming, and I felt like a goddess," she said. "It's a celebration, and I'm here because the show I work on is being recognized as excellent work. Let me go to a party and wear my pretty dress!"
