Chi Cheng dies: Deftones' former bassist was 42
Fans of the rock band the Deftones are remembering former bassist Chi Cheng, who passed away over the weekend from injuries he suffered in a 2008 car crash. He was 42.
On Saturday, April 13, 2013, Cheng was taken to the emergency room, where "his heart just suddenly stopped," according to his mother.
"He fought the good fight. You stood by him sending love daily. He knew that he was very loved and never alone," Jeanne Marie Cheng wrote to her son's supporters on the website, One Love for Chi.
The bassist was ejected from a car in a head-on collision in Santa Clara in November 2008, according to the Associated Press. Cheng sustained serious injuries that left him in a coma for years. He had reportedly shown some signs of improvement recently, according to updates his family posted on the fan website.
Cheng played on five albums with the Sacramento-based band. The group won a Best Metal Performance Grammy in 2001.
