Cher says that she was the 'Mama Bear' of 'Burlesque', which stars Christina Aguilera
Cher says she was the "Mama Bear" among the cast members of her new musical film "Burlesque", which stars singer Christina Aguilera in her first movie role.
In the film, which opened on Friday, Cher portrays Tess, a nightclub proprietor and headliner who is struggling to keep the place open. Aguilera plays Ali, a small-town girl who moves to Los Angeles and begins working at the club as a cocktail waitress, aiming to one day perform on stage. The movie also stars Kristen Bell and Julianne Hough of "Dancing With the Stars" fame.
"The combination of everything, it's a beautiful film, it's really funny, it's really up and I think the singing and dancing is unbelievable," Cher told OnTheRedCarpet.com recently. It was kind of exciting being with these girls and hanging out. They were so fresh and so excited that it kind of made you the same way. I was like the 'Mama Bear' in the whole thing,
When asked why she chose "Burlesque" as her return to the big screen, Cher said: "I wanted to sing, you know, I wanted to sing in a film. I'd been offered "Mamma Mia!" ... and I was on the road, so I couldn't do it and I just thought if I don't take this, there aren't that many musicals made and I think this is good. And I understood the character. I mean, I know Tess well. I loved both of my songs and I just had the best time doing both of them."
In the film, Cher's character becomes Ali's mentor. It seems this relationship carried into real life as Aguilera has said she "absorbed Cher like a sponge and learned great things from her."
Cher spoke equally kindly of the singer and took her under her wing, offering Christina love advice following her recent divorce from Jordan Bratman and praising the 29-year-old's acting chops.
"I think she was a little nervous, but she and I got along so well and she trusted me and I just said to her, 'I will never do any weird actress crap to you and I'm here to support you,'" Cher said of supporting her young costar, "And I think I did a good job."
Christina certainly has plenty to learn from Cher who is the only female solo artist to reach the Top Ten of the Billboard Hot 100 in each of the last four decades and has another album set to release in 2011. In 2008, Cher also signed a deal to perform 200 shows at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas.
