Charlize Theron becomes a mom, adopts baby boy named Jackson

03/14/2012 by Corinne Heller

Charlize Theron recently adopted a baby boy named Jackson, who is her first child.

A spokesperson for the 36-year-old Oscar-winning actress had no immediate comment about where her son was born. People magazine carried the initial report on Wednesday, March 14, quoting her rep as saying Theron "is the proud mom of a healthy baby boy named Jackson."

The actress, who grew up an only child in South Africa, has not spoken about her baby or whether she plans on raising him alone. She is unmarried and is currently not linked to anyone romantically.

"I haven't been single since like, 19," she said on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" in December 2011. "I've been in two relationships. One was 10 years and one was three years ... back to back."

Theron dated Third Eye Blind frontman Stephan Jenkins between 1997 and 2000. She and Irish actor Stuart Townsend were together for almost a decade before splitting up in January 2010. The two co-starred together in the 2002 film "Trapped" and the 2004 film "Head in the Clouds."

She told Ellen DeGeneres that she is "really enjoying" being single.

"I think that I'm a bit of a creature that is definitely very comfortable in a relationship," she said. "That was my twenties and my early thirties. I was never single and now all of a sudden ... not that I'm painting the town red and dancing and clubbing, but I'm really enjoying being on my own."

Theron also discussed how difficult it can be for celebrities to keep their love lives private.

"You just can't date normal people because as soon as you're seen with someone, do you really want to deal with that?" she said. "Then it's not casual dating anymore. It's like, you're married and having a child."

In June 2011, Theron said on the CNN show "Piers Morgan Tonight" that she believes marriage is a "divine right," but has no interest in getting married in the future.

"Some would say that it's because I came from a very troubled marriage - my parents did not have a good marriage, but I don't think it's that," she added.

Theron grew up in a small farm town in South Africa. Her last name is pronounced "Thron" in Afrikaans, which was her first language. She was an only child. When she was 15, her mother, Gerda, shot and killed the actress' alcoholic father, Charles, in self-defense. Theron is named after him.

Theron worked as a model in Milan and also studied at the Joffrey Ballet School in New York City before she pursued an acting career. She made her official big-screen debut in 1996 with the films "2 Days in the Valley" and "That Thing You Do!." She won an Oscar for her role as a serial killer in the 2003 film "Monster."

She also appeared in the 2011 comedy movie "Young Adult," which earned her a Golden Globe nomination. Also last year, Theron finished shooting Ridley Scott's "Prometheus."

She can be seen next in "Snow White and the Huntsman." She plays the Evil Queen opposite Kristen Stewart, who stars as Snow White. The movie hits theaters on June 1. Check out a trailer and photos from the film.
