CeeLo Green charged with giving ecstasy to woman
Singer-songwriter and "The Voice" star CeeLo Green has been charged with furnishing ecstasy to a woman who last year accused him of sexual assault and could face prison time if found guilty, OTRC.com has learned.
The 39-year-old TV star has not commented. CeeLo, whose real name is Thomas DeCarlo Callaway, faces up to four years in prison if convicted.
He is accused of allegedly slipping ecstasy to a 34-year-old woman while the two had dinner at a restaurant in downtown Los Angeles "sometime between July 13 and July 14, 2012," an L.A. District Attorney's Office spokesperson said in a statement obtained by OTRC.com on Monday, Oct. 21, ahead of an afternoon arraignment. He and the woman later went to the woman's hotel, the rep said.
The Los Angeles Police Department began investigating the case and the woman's allegations of drug-facilitated sexual assault in July 2012. CeeLo was charged with one felony count of furnishing a controlled substance. He will not face a charge of rape of an intoxicated person due to lack of evidence, prosecutors say.
They determined "there is insufficient evidence to prove that the level of the victim's intoxication deprived the victim of the capacity to give consent" and that "there is insufficient evidence to prove that [CeeLo] knew or should have known that the victim lacked the capacity to consent to have sex with him as required by law."
"Because [CeeLo] administered the substance, it is reasonable to believe that [he] knew or should have known that the victim was under the influence of ecstasy. He may have even recognized signs of lowered sexual inhibitions brought on by the drug," prosecutors wrote. "However, the law is clear that knowledge of lowered inhibitions is not enough to prove this element."
