Catherine Zeta-Jones gets CBE from Prince Charles

02/24/2011 by Corinne Heller

Catherine Zeta-Jones was recently made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire, or CBE, by Prince Charles of the United Kingdom.

The 41-year-old actress, who was born in Wales in the UK, was recognized for her services to the film industry and to her charity work. She received the honor on Thursday at Buckingham Palace and was accompanied by her 66-year-old actor-husband Michael Douglas, who recently battled throat cancer, and their children Dylan and Carys, who are 10 and 7 years old.

"It means a lot to come home with my family and to be honored in this way," Zeta-Jones told the UK newspaper the Telegraph in a video interview (see below). "Very emotional, rather nervous, I must say, and it was great to have Michael in good health to be able to enjoy it with me. It's been a very emotional morning."

"The last time I saw his Royal Highness, Michael had just started treatment," the actress added. "He was concerned. So he was very happy to have heard that he's well on the road to recovery."

Zeta-Jones, known for movies such as "The Mask of Zorro" and "Chicago," and Prince Charles, who is the father of Prince William and the first in line to the British throne, both attended the Ryder Cup golf tournament in Wales in October 2010. The actress left the event early to be with her husband as he continued his cancer treatments. Douglas said in January that he had beaten the disease and that his throat tumor was gone.

Other celebrities who have been appointed to the Order of the British Empire include Julie Andrews, Eric Clapton, Bono, Joan Collins, Joe Cocker, Judi Dench, former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, Kylie Minogue, Helen Mirren, Paul McCartney, Robert Plant, "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling, Kevin Spacey, Rod Stewart and Steven Spielberg.
