Carrie Underwood supports same-sex marriage: 'We should all have the right to love'

06/11/2012 by Kristina Lopez

Carrie Underwood can be counted on the list of celebrities who support same-sex marriage.

The "American Idol" season four champ and "Jesus Take the Wheel" singer expressed her support in a new interview with UK publication The Independent published on June 9.

"As a married person myself, I don't know what it's like to be told I can't marry somebody I love, and want to marry," Underwood said. "I can't imagine how that must feel. I definitely think we should all have the right to love, and love publicly, the people that we want to love."

Underwood tied the knot with professional hockey player Mike Fisher in July 2010. The 29-year-old recently released her fourth studio album "Blown Away" in May and won a Country Music Television Award last week for Video of the Year for "Good Girl."

The "American Idol" winner was raised a Baptist but now says she and Fisher worship in a non-denominational congregation and her faith contributes to her attitude toward accepting same-sex marriage.

"Our church is gay friendly," Underwood told The Independent. "Above all, God wanted us to love others. It's not about setting rules, or [saying] 'everyone has to be like me'. No. We're all different. That's what makes us special. We have to love each other and get on with each other. It's not up to me to judge anybody."

Underwood also said she is not fond of "people who use the Bible for hate" and added, "That's not how I would want myself as a Christian to be represented."

The singer is set to have her first British concert at the Royal Albert Hall later this month. Underwood is a five-time Grammy Award-winner and is currently on tour.
