Carol Burnett is returning to "All My Children" on Tuesday, reprising her role as Verla Grubbs, the long-lost daughter of Langley Wallingford.

Burnett will guest star on two episodes of the long-running ABC daytime soap opera, which will air its final episode on September 23.

The 78-year-old veteran actress was a fan of the series and the show's creator/writer Agnes Nixon created the conniving Verla Grubbs character for the actress nearly 30 years ago. Burnett debuted on the show in 1983 and portrayed Grubbs multiple times in the early 80's. Burnett also reprised her role in 1995 for the 25th anniversary of the series.

"It is our honor and pleasure to welcome back Carol Burnett to Pine Valley," executive producer Julie Hanan Carruthers said in a statement. "Verla Grubbs is a beloved member of the 'All My Children' family and we look forward to reprising her character."

After 40 years on-air, "All My Children" will be replaced by a talk show, "The Chew" at the end of the month. The soap opera "One Life To Live" will also broadcast its series finale in January 2012.

Earlier in the week, "All My Children" star Susan Lucci made headlines for criticizing ABC's head of daytime programming Brian Frons, in an epilogue for the newest paperback edition of her book "All My Life: A Memoir."

Burnett recently appeared on several episodes of "Glee," as Sue Sylvester's retired Nazi hunter mother, Doris. Jane Lynch, who plays Sylvester, the show's villain, had confirmed the veteran television actress' appearance to OnTheRedCarpet.com in August.

Burnett, an Emmy winner who had her own sketch comedy series between 1967 and 1978, has in recent made several guest appearances on contemporary shows such as "Desperate Housewives" and "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit."

"All My Children" airs Monday through Friday at 1 p.m. ET on ABC.
