Carla Gugino talks about penguin friendships in 'Mr. Popper's Penguins'
Carla Gugino told OnTheRedCarpet.com that when she signed up for "Mr. Popper's Penguins," she imagined that she would become friends with the penguins, but she quickly realized that they had other plans.
"We first had to visit them in the habitat," Gugino told OnTheRedCarpet.com at the film's Hollywood premiere. "I thought that I could become best friends with them but I'm not really sure that you can become best friends with them unless you're holding a piece of fish."
"But they were amazing," she added. "We were given a couple of basic instructions and really, they were pretty easy to work with. They're untamable, they're really sort of unpredictable, but as an actor, that's always what you want."
"Mr. Popper's Penguins," which was released on Friday, June 17, follows businessman Mr. Popper (Jim Carrey) who receives a penguin as a gift and soon finds himself the caretaker of five more of them and subsequently has to rearrange his life and home to accommodate the new changes. Gugino plays Mr. Popper's ex-wife Amanda in the film.
Gugino has appeared in films like "Watchmen," "Sin City" and "Sucker Punch." She has also had roles in several family films including "Night at the Museum" and the "Spy Kids" franchise.
"I do always love to do a movie that the entire family can come and see," Gugino said. "I think as a kid, when I got to go do that with my family, those things were life-changing and they're memories that I will always have, so I feel really happy to be a part of it."
Though she was glad to have the opportunity, Gugino decided that she might need to add a clause to her future contracts that deal with the temperature on set.
"The set was always between 36 and 40 degrees and I'm a warm weather baby," Gugino said. "So for me, that was the biggest challenge of the movie. But there was a point where Jim and I were sitting there freezing and I looked over and said okay, in my next film I will say 'Carla Gugino works best at 72 degrees,' because who knew you could choose your own temperature? Clearly the penguins knew!"
